MNSHAPE and Special Olympics MN Partnership Announcement

The Minnesota Society of Health and Physical Educators (MNSHAPE) and Special Olympics Minnesota (SOMN), both not-for-profit organizations, are joining forces to help promote professional services and resources for teachers, organizations, and individuals to provide quality programs in health and physical education, both in-school and for after school sports. The two organizations share an ongoing commitment to reducing preventable health conditions and promoting inclusive activities in the areas of physical activity, dance and health promotion. They are dedicated to improving the skills, knowledge, health and well-being of all Minnesota students.

Founded in 1968, Special Olympics is a global movement to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities. SOMN fosters acceptance of all people through the power of sport and programming in education, health, and leadership. MNSHAPE is a school-based professional association that provides professional services and resources to all who are working to improve their teaching and best practice for all students. What could be better, two organizations coming together to foster students, with and without intellectual disabilities, to develop skills while forming friendships, fostering respect for each other, and becoming leaders on and off the court. We can do all of this through a partnership with emphasis on Unified Sports.

With over 3,300 students participating in Unified Physical Education class all across Minnesota and over 2,000 health and physical educators in Minnesota we can most certainly cross the line of difference. A quote from Tim Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics International, “Unified teaches young people the world over that there is no difference that should separate them from one another. No disability that implies the lack of ability. No exceptionality that they cannot conquer by playing together and learn to live together as a result of being teammates. So let’s teach the idea of teammates all. Let’s teach the idea that by playing together we can actually create a social revolution. Let’s teach the idea that in the fun of the sport we can open our eyes to the joy of human belonging. What’s the meaning of Unified – it is simply this, than we can all get along if we play our way in one more unified future.” We look forward to this partnership – join us!
